PARTY DECOR: DIY GLITTER BIRTHDAY CANDLES

When it comes to birthday party decor, I feel that balloons and glitter are two main components of a great time! Last week I shared an easy DIY Confetti Balloon Tutorial and in the spirit of just celebrating my birthday I am sharing another fun party trick.

Most birthdays involve candles of some sort but for some reason we are deeply lacking in beautiful fun options! I feel like this a a multi-million dollar industry but all you can offer me are these plain numbered candles that are available in every dollar store possible and look horrible! Maybe I should start a business selling birthday candles, make millions and then retire to Bora Bora? The plan is solid folks!

Okay…back to the task at hand – when looking for numbered birthday candles you will mostly come across these one below – nothing too fun or imaginative. With just a few easy steps you can can add some sparkle to the day!

To begin – this DIY requires:

  • birthday candles
  • glue or Mod Podge
  • glitter
  • flat utensil (used for scraping)

STEPS:

1) Scrape off the colourful wax design with a flat utensil (mail opener, butter knife etc) to leave a white finish on the candle.

2) Clean off candle with a napkin – removing the excess wax pieces that may still be on the top.

3) Put glue all over the candle (using a thin paintbrush or your finger if needed!) Make sure you do not spill on the side of the edges but also ensure everything is covered or you will have white spots.

4) Shake your glitter all over the candle (Baby, I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake –
I shake it off, I shake it off) ensuring you cover all the areas where glue has been placed.

JMS TIP: Paper plates for the win! Grab some leftover party plates before you pour the glitter on for easy cleanup later!

5) Once the candle is fully covered, leave it to dry for 1-2 hours before use. Shake off any excess glitter once the glue is done drying and you are done!

6) Get ready to sing HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!
