HALLOWEEN KIDS HAUNTED HOUSE FUN + FREE PRINTABLE

Halloween definitely tops my list of holidays that I love and I enjoy celebrating it every year. As a kid, my parents would go all out on the decorations especially my dad whos personal mission was to make the outside of our house as fun/scary as possible. This usually involved us stuffing newspapers into all sorts of items that would turn into large spiders, scary ghosts or crushed legs coming out of the garage (my fav!). Sometimes our costumes were purchased and other times they involved some genius handcrafting but we always had a blast trick or treating in our neighbourhoods. As I grew older I never forgot the fun feeling you get as kids around the holiday. Halloween is full of entertainment and candy as well as scary mystery and magical creatures. It is always surprising and every year can bring its own set of fun. One of my favourite parts of Halloween was when someone created an epic haunted house (not too scary) and we got to go through it as kids. That was always so fun!

For this Halloween, I wanted to create a fun mini version of a Halloween haunted house you can do with the kiddos at home! Nothing too scary but a lot of fun and interactive. I’m hoping this has them laughing and enjoying the monster parts I have come up with!

HOW IT WORKS

This can be part of a larger haunted house display and be one of the “pit stops” or a stand-alone fun afternoon activity. Kids get to experience a “scary but not so scary” haunted house by reaching into three different bowls and guessing what ghouly monster parts they are touching! Imagine being a kid and touching something slimy, squishy and round – ewwwwwwww I can’t believe you just touched Zombie Eyeballs! Gross!

Place the three bowls on a table and cover them with a cloth OR put a blindfold on the child (whatever is easiest). The kids then get to reach into each bowl (one by one) and feel around for a minute. I want the kids to use their imagination and come up with creative monster parts they are feeling. If someone can guess the items below (or close to them) they get a prize!

This game may also work with drunk adults but I haven’t tried – please let me know if you do!!

THE SCARY MONSTER PARTS

I had so much fun brainstorming these items and shopping for them. Have you ever asked yourself – what food item will look most like a creepy monster eyeball??? This was definitely a first but a really fun one! I selected three items that can easily be found at your located grocery store and are quite cheap!

1) ZOMBIE EYEBALLS – These are my favourite! Imagine reaching into a bowl of these and not knowing what you are touching – I love it! I have heard of people peeling grapes to resemble eyeballs but who the heck has the time for that? For these zombie eyeballs, I used longan in a can and you can also use lychee in a can (both found in the international ilse of your grocery store). They come ready like this and feel all nice and squishy for ya!

2) DRACULA TEETH – Ahhhhh the dreaded candy corn! I have still not found one person that enjoys this stuff. Horrible for eating, perfecccct for simulating pointy Dracula teeth.

JMS TIP: Candy corn also doubles as a Halloween decoration afterwards – add it to a hurricane case with a candle and you are done!

3) WITCHES FINGERS – Baby corn was the perfect canned item to transform into old shrivelled up witch fingers! Does anyone even eat this stuff?

I created a little Halloween setup on my table with the three bowls in the middle. I also created a fun printable that says “Reach in if you are but be ready for a scare!” which summarizes the table quite well. I hope you enjoy this printable and you can download your free copy below. Have fun with your little ones!
