Thanksgiving is right around the corner here in Canada and it feels like it came quite early this year. Our traditions are pretty low key around this time of year, mainly involving getting together with family for the big ol’ turkey dinner (although half of us are vegetarian/vegans so the turkeys a little smaller nowadays!) and fitting in some fun Oktoberfest time. The city we are from celebrates Oktoberfest in a big way and we thoroughly enjoy it!
I love decorating for all holidays and seasons and Thanksgiving is no exception. Knowing the fall season was going to come in full force I wanted to start planning my Thanksgiving table early on. I am so excited to share this year’s Thanksgiving tablescape because I had the pleasure of coordinating with Kusala from Kukaru Designs on it! If you have not checked out Kusala’s website yet she provides tutorials on sewing and knitting and has various resources available on www.kukarudesigns.com. She also has a scrunchie tutorial that I have been eyeing and just may have to attempt shortly!
We started brainstorming this tablescape weeks ago and we knew we wanted to do something different than the typical fall colours. We both love the fall season and we’re excited to collaborate on this gorgeous tablescape! I hope you enjoy what we came up with because its really starting to feel like fall over here and we are in the celebrating mood. Check out all the fun details below!
COLOUR THEME
Before settling on the olive green and gold theme, we went through various colour palettes to see what was best for the season. Although orange screams fall, we wanted to go in a different direction and try a more modern twist on the table with seasonal colours. Funny enough we made the decision towards the end of the summer before the fall decorations were out on display and it turned out that there were no olive green and gold decorations to be found when I went shopping! I had to search a few stores to put everything together but in the end, it came together quite well. The olive green colour really reminds me of darker earthy tones around the fall season and the gold provides that special touch for the season. Kusala sourced out the perfect olive green colour fabric for the runner and napkins to match the gold accents on the table (more on the diy runner and napkins below).
PLACE SETTINGS
As soon as I saw these plates in HomeSense (part of the HomeGoods/TJMaxx family) I fell in love! They have the most beautiful gold leaves/branches all around the perimeter of the plate and really pop on the table. They are made by the company Ciroa Luxe and I found them for $5.99 each at my local HomeSense store. They are handwash only but I don’t find that an issue for special pieces in my collection. As for the cutlery, the gold colour is absolutely perfect and exactly what I was looking for! I originally was planning on getting my gold cutlery from Ikea but as I went to purchase the set they discontinued the product and advised it would not be coming back. I then went on the hunt and found this (shiny) gold set on Amazon by the company Berglander. I was a little apprehensive ordering them without seeing the set in person but they were exactly what I wanted! I ended up getting two sets to have for a larger gathering in the future.
The last detail which is my absolute favourite is the individual laser cut name cards on each place setting. I had these made on etsy for my whole family in a few different colours so we can reuse them in various holiday settings. The shop that creates these is the Fran Johnson House on Etsy but there are various vendors that sell this custom product. I think it really gives the table that extra special touch!
TABLE LINENS
Kusala’s main focus on Kukaru Designs is sewing and knitting/crocheting tutorials, therefore, it was a perfect partnership for her to design the table runner and napkins for the Thanksgiving tablescape. We choose to do a matching table runner and napkin set as it really brings the whole table together and elevates the dining experience overall. Cloth napkins are always that added special touch and can be reused for many years. Kusala has written a full post on what kind of material was used and all steps on how to make your own. She created the table runner with beautiful macrame detailing and mitered corners along with a set of matching napkins. Her tutorials are always easy to follow and making your own allows you to customize the items any way you want! Make sure you check out her full post at Kukaru Designs. The tablecloth is by Elite Hemstitch and was found at HomeSense.
TABLE DECOR
For the main centrepiece, I wanted to create a look that really draws the eye to the center of the table and stands out right away. I wanted to incorporate various colours and fall items, therefore, I decided to combine them all together along the full table. I used real white pumpkins mixed in between pumpkin candles and other decor items. I also wanted a natural element to the table because I love using real flowers where possible and I ended up bringing in some branches of real eucalyptus to help tie the table together. The white pumpkins were purchased at our local farm and all the decor/candle pumpkins were from Homesense.
I hope this provides you inspiration to design your own tablescape in any colours of your choosing! Customizing around your own creations helps create the look you are imagining (not always so easy to find in store) and gives the tablescape that extra special touch.
I have been enjoying my table decor setup all week as it really makes the whole house feel like Fall. I have a few more decorations to put up around the area but at least my table is set and ready for the Thanksgiving meal this weekend!
