Valentine’s day is filled with love and sweet treats and these chocolate covered Oreos help you take care of 50% of that! And trust me, they do not disappoint!
Everyone loves an Oreo cookie but I didn’t realize adding some simple melted chocolate and sprinkles (optional) would make it that much better. It’s truly an easy dessert that involves few ingredients and steps, but looks fancy and tastes great.
To get started:
1. Pick up your favourite pack of Oreos. I went for the regular ones (the OG) but I can see double stuffed being amazing as well or any fun flavour you think would mix well with chocolate.
2. Buy some delicious chocolate. I went with some extra creamy milk chocolate but follow your heart and pick up something you will love!
JMS TIP: Make this treat dairy free (vegan)! Did you know that Oreos are actually vegan? If you want to make this for friends that eat plant based or that are dairy free, just grab some chocolate that doesn’t contain milk. Usually anything over 70% is almost safe but always check the label just incase!
3. Grab some fun sprinkles or additions you want to add into the chocolate. This is totally an optional step and more for fun decoration. I went with some Valentine’s Day fun but this can work for any holiday or special occasion. Please note: no important occasion is ever required to eat ALL the chocolate covered Oreos.
4. Grab your supplies – I got together a cookie sheet with parchment paper to put the Oreos on once dipped as well as a pot and heat safe bowl to create a double boiler.
5. Make sure all your items, spoons, sprinkles, Oreos etc are within reach and organized. You will have to work somewhat quickly to finish before the chocolate hardens once melted but there is time – no need to rush. Just helps to be organized!
6. Start by melting the chocolate – you can follow the steps on my previous post HOMEMADE CHOCOLATES or just google “how to melt chocolate”. There are some great resources online!
7. Once the chocolate is melted I put in one cookie at a time into the melted chocolate puddle and rotated it around until all sides were covered. I used mini tongs during this step and they worked great.
8. Once fully covered, let the excess chocolate slightly drip off and place the chocolate covered Oreo onto the parchment paper.
JMS TIP: Don’t let too much chocolate drip off or the sides will start to show. If this happens just re-dip the cookie into the chocolate goodness and only let it drip off for a moment.
9. Once you place the cookie on the paper sprinkle any toppings/embellishments right away before the chocolate hardens. Do this for each cookie individually otherwise the chocolate will have hardened if you wait till the end.
10. Once you are done dipping all your Oreos, place the tray into the fridge and let them cool for at least 1 hour.
11. Once hardened – take out of the fridge and ENJOY!
